Figure Drawing: Unit 4

Essential Questions • What is human body figure drawing, and how are they created? • How do you use proportion, line and geometry to create your human figure body drawings? • How do you use the basic drawing techniques of Line, Shading, and Detail to work with the human face and figure?

Enduring Understandings • Understanding of the art and techniques of human figure life drawing.

• Understanding of the process of creating human figure and face drawings. • Understanding how to create original drawings of human faces, hands and bodies using the basic proportions of the body.

Learning Targets (Objectives) Students will ...be able to understand the techniques and history of Human Figure Life Drawing • Be able to know and understand the vocabulary of life drawing/figure drawing. Be able to use this basic knowledge to create original human facial and figure drawings through guided activities and projects. • Students will develop a basic knowledge of the mathematics and proportions used in the creation of human figure and facial drawings.

UNIT 4 VOCABULARY: FIGURE DRAWING

Figure Drawing: a drawing of the human form in any of its various shapes and postures using any drawing media.

Gesture Drawing: the action, form, and pose of a model/figure. Typical situations involve drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time.

Contour Drawing: definition of a form or an edge. It is, essentially, the outline or silhouette of a given object or figure.

Volume Drawing: also called value drawing. A drawing showing the mass of the figure containing no lines; the most detailed type of figure drawing.

Charcoal: dry art medium made of finely grounded organic materials that are held together by a gum or wax binder. Great for smooth-rough textures; easy to blend; creates a range of values quickly; leaves marks that are less permanent.
